Samhain Rituals: Honoring Ancestors & the Thinning Veil

Samhain is an ancient Celtic seasonal festival marking the transition into the darker half of the year—a liminal time traditionally associated with honoring the dead, remembering ancestors, and the thinning of the veil between worlds.

We are at the time of year where the dreamspace becomes more ambiguous. Are the visions coming through as we slip into these liminal spaces mere fabrications of the dreaming mind or are they the messages from our beloved dead pressing through the thinning veil?

As the season shifts and we turn more inward, the opportunity arises for reflection and honoring. For acknowledging our ancestors and the chosen family who have shaped us who have moved into the realm of Other. We have the opportunity to reflect on the ways our own spirits have evolved and shifted; deepening our understanding of ourselves and what we choose to incubate during the dark months ahead.

The art of ritual assists in creating the container to support this honoring during the Samhain season. It assists in giving tangible actions and meaning to our intentions and manifestations.

Here are some ritual suggestions to support the process in honoring your dead:

Create an Ancestor Altar

Designate a small table, shelf, or other surface to set the space for remembrance. Lay down a beautiful cloth as your foundation and arrange photos of loved ones through the veil, small objects, and any other item that you feel called to include. Decorate your altar with rosemary for remembrance and protection, roses for love, parsley as an offering of good luck in the hereafter, a small plate of food and a bit of drink, or any alternate decorations or offerings that feel meaningful to you and those you are holding in memory. Add your own special touches to make it unique to your spirit.

Host a Samhain Silent Supper

A Silent Supper also known as a Dumb Supper is a tradition in which you gather together for a meal in complete silence. A place is set at the table for each guest with a setting and space reserved at the head of the table for the spirits or the specific spirit of a deceased loved one. Candles are lit and there is an offering of food and drink offered to the spirit. Share your meal in sacred silence and upon completion, offer the spirit food to an outside space or shrine.

A Samhain Ritual for Release and Renewal

Here is a ritual suggestion for honoring yourself. As humans we are ever evolving. In order to support our personal growth, we need to make space by releasing what is no longer serving us. Write down on a piece of paper all of the old patterns, griefs, negative thoughts and experiences that are not serving you. In a fire-safe bowl or cauldron, burn this piece of paper to ash, feeling these blockages releasing from your energy form as it burns. Release the ashes outside and feel lighter and more at peace. Follow this practice by meditating about what you would like to call in to fill this space that will support you moving forward into the next year.

The veil is at its thinnest on All Hallow’s Eve. Pay close attention to the messages coming through as you reflect at your altar, light your candles, and surrender to the velvety comfort of your bed and your dreams.
